Smart home technology is advancing every year — soon you’ll be able to automate nearly every mundane action in your home, from controlling your thermostat to opening and closing your garage door, and everything in between.

Let’s take a closer look at the future of this technology and the gadgets you’ll want to add to your home in the coming years.

Current Technology

You can bring home plenty of smart toys right now to help you automate some of the functions in your home. Smart thermostats, for example, allow you to program your home’s HVAC system to turn on when you’re home and off when you’re not, saving you money on your home’s energy bill. A smart garage door opener can allow you to close your garage door when you’re away from home, in case you forget to close it when you leave for work.

IoT hubs like Google Home and Amazon Echo allow you to send messages, order things and even play music with one simple vocal command. Smart cameras can let you see what is going on in your home in real time, and you can even pick up some smart blinds that can be programmed to open or close depending on the location of the sun on any given day.

Future Smart Home Technology

As exciting as these tools are, they’re just a small sample of the kind of advances that we’re looking at in the future. Let’s take a closer look at some of the new technology in the pipeline that should be hitting the shelves within the next few years.

1. Smart Kitchens

We probably all already have a few digital tools in our kitchen — thermometers to measure food temperature, digital scales to help with baking and portion control and even digital stoves that set a more accurate temperature. These babies are nothing when you compare them to what we can expect from future tech.

For example, smart fridges will have sensors that can tell you when your food is fixing to spoil. One model from LG will even be able to offer you some recipe options to help you use that food before it goes bad.3D food printers will be able to help you make the most intricate foods ever — everything from pasta to cookie dough to fancily shaped hamburgers. A smart ice cream maker will ensure you never end up with butter instead of ice cream ever again because you left your ice cream base in the churn too long. This device keeps track of the hardness of the ice cream and keeps it ready for you until you’re ready for dessert.

Smart ovens will be set up to help you monitor your food as it cooks — they may even have cameras that allow you to watch your cookies bake in real-time from your smartphone.

We aren’t quite to the point where our appliances will do all the cooking for us, but this is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.

2. Smart Bathrooms

Yes, there will even be smart technology for your bathroom. You’ll be able to program your smart tub to draw a bath for you with nothing more than a few clicks on your smartphone. Some will even be able to help you relax even more by inducing relaxing brain waves while you’re soaking with your bubbles and your glass of wine.

Smart diffusers let you control your essential oil aromatherapy with nothing but your smartphone, adding another layer to your relaxation.

3. Smart Bedrooms

A lot of us probably use our fitness tracker to keep track of how long and how well we sleep at night.  Imagine a mattress that could do that for you. That’s precisely what Eight’s mattress does — sensors embedded directly into the bed track your sleep, then transmit the information to your smartphone through a variety of different apps.

Smart clothes hanging in your closet will be able to track your health.  Smart gloves will be able to detect your body temperature and warm up your hands accordingly. Amazon even has a mirror that allows you to try on clothes — virtually — in your bedroom. Imagine shopping without ever having to leave home, but knowing the clothes would fit and look right on you when they arrived.

We don’t know about you, but we’re pretty darn excited about all these fantastic advances currently in the works. However, there is one thing missing from this list that we’re looking forward to — a robot that will wash, dry and fold all our laundry!
